Research: are universities hindering student carers?

There’s a call for universities and colleges to give more consideration to students who are also carers

I'm John Warburton with news that there’s a call for universities and colleges to give more consideration to students who are also carers.  Researchers from Staffordshire University have found care responsibilities mean students sometimes can’t study far away from home, and there are harmful effects to learners’ mental health. And full-time students who are carers can’t get the usual allowance. The researchers suggest colleges need to be more flexible in welcoming student carers, and teaching staff should be trained to recognise when there’s a difficulty.
