I'm John Warburton with news that the Royal College of Nursing wants the new Health Secretary to show support for the sector with what union leaders call an “immediate and substantial” pay rise. The professional body’s chief exec was responding to this week’s unprecedented government upheavals, warning Steve Barclay could preside over a “political vacuum” when nursing staff face financial pressures and a workforce crisis. Pat Cullen adds that, in real terms, there’s been a “decade of pay cuts”. The government insists nursing salaries have still risen in the face of a public sector pay freeze.
