Newly announced ‘flexibility’ over council tax could boost social care funding

The Chancellor said from next April, local authorities can also increase council tax by 2% to pay for care

I'm John Warburton with news that a two-year delay to reforms in care funding was accompanied, in yesterday’s Autumn Statement, by new powers to increase council tax to pay for social care. The Chancellor said from next April, local authorities can also increase council tax by 2% to pay for care. That’s twice the current 1% limit. Meanwhile, the charge cap on the cost of care of £86,000 will stay until April 2025. There’ll also be a new review into th e operation of Integrated Care Boards.
