Billions of medical items used as part of the Covid response are ending up as landfill

I’m Matt Rosser keeping you up to date with news that billions of medical items used as part of the Covid response are ending up as landfill, creating a serious threat to the environment and human health. Discarded protective clothing, syringes, gloves, face masks and test kits are straining waste management systems and the WHO is calling on manufacturers to use more biodegradable materials and eco-friendly packaging.
The WHO points to creative ways for sustainably reusing medical waste, such as an Australian scheme which turned discarded face masks into roadbuilding materials. We’ll keep you up to date on this and other developments, here on Care Radio.
