Age UK warns of increase in excess deaths this winter

I'm Nick Meir with news that social care leaders fear a record number of excess deaths among older people this winter unless the Government makes a “significant intervention” to help the elderly with their energy bills. Age UK said pensioners face a “perfect storm” of problems as the cost of living crisis worsens while the NHS remains under huge strain with emergency care in dire straits. In 2019, the last pre-Covid year, there were just over 28,000 excess winter deaths in England and Wales, made up of mostly older people with predictions the figure could easily be surpassed in the coming months.
