Tens of thousands living with undiagnosed dementia

NHS data shows fewer than 73,000 consultations have actually taken place. Charities warn this means people are not being offered the support or medication they need

I’m Paul Hutton with news that the number of people being assessed for dementia has halved since the pandemic. GPs are supposed to refer suspected sufferers to a memory clinic, which can make a diagnosis. If services had continued to function normally, around 140,000 such assessments would have taken place since the start of 2020, but NHS data shows fewer than 73,000 consultations have actually taken place. Charities warn this means people are not being offered the support or medication they need.
