Memory loss could be reversed by HIV drug

Researchers in California have discovered a gene that contributes to memory loss, and found that switching it off boosts recall

I’m Sarah Hutton with news that memory loss in older age could be restored using a readily available HIV drug. Researchers in California have discovered a gene that contributes to memory loss, and found that switching it off boosts recall. Crucially, the gene also encodes the receptor which HIV needs to enter cells, and a drug called maraviroc is already available to silence its effect. It means it may be useful as an early intervention for dementia. We’ll have more on this and other stories here on Care Radio.
