Government consults on expanding roles for less senior healthcare staff

One government suggestion is that they might increase their responsibilities to include some prescribing of treatments, which they don’t normally do

I'm John Warburton with news that new government plans came out on Saturday to expand the roles of physician associates and anaesthesia associates, by having their work regulated by the General Medical Council. At the moment, professionals in these roles support GPs and surgeons to give medical care and anaesthetic services. One government suggestion is that they might increase their responsibilities to include some prescribing of treatments, which they don’t normally do. However, earlier the BMA warned a fully qualified GP’s training as a doctor will be hard to substitute.
